The Peacebuilding en las Américas (PLA) Peace Baskets Project (PAN PAV) is successfully underway in all five countries where PLA works: Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia and Ecuador. The project was designed and proposed by national partners to address the multiple pandemics they are facing. Covid 19 is accompanied by what partners call a hunger-violence pandemic. Violence has increased not only in the domestic sphere but also in the public sphere as States implement increasingly militarized approaches to the public health crises. There is hunger for food, for peace, for hope. The Peace Baskets aims to fill these hungers, offering a light in the midst of many shadows.
Video translation in English:
“It’s a pleasure to be able to greet the people who are able to view this video. My name is Luis. My adjective is Light. I am a Facilitator of the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) here in Guatemala. In relation to me personally, it’s been rather trying because it limits how much work I can do. My work had previously provided a minimum of resources with which to support my family. That has now become very difficult for me—though sadly that makes me part of the rule, not the exception.
But despite the difficult times, I am grateful to AVP Guatemala in the person of its coordinator, Lorena, who has always seen to my wellbeing through messaging, phone calls, and uplifting and encouraging words as these apply to my current situation. Well, it fills me with joy to know that though, owing to the current health situation, I may have had to temporarily retreat from full participation in the AVP workshop routine, people continue to show they’re interested in me by asking regularly how I am and how I’m doing, [and thereby] showing their sensitivity to the fact that I’ve got a family to support. Yes, it’s very nice to know there are people who feel led to call spontaneously, or to message me for one reason or another.
On the other hand, as a contribution beneficiary. I want to pass along some words of thanks to donors, above all to the PAN PAV basic food expense project. Even without knowing us, you “keep us in mind” and from here, then, receive a hearty shout-out and a hug! Heartfelt thank yous that, with the support of PLA and AVP International, [your] donation can reach this small corner of Guatemala. …I thank you sincerely, and with all my heart, for the assistance intended for us aid recipients. And as far as I’m concerned, I’ll say it again, it fills my heart with joy to know there are people in other parts of the world who’ll do what they can [for me and us here in Guatemala]. Even without personally knowing us, you’re still [willing to] scrape together whatever you can to help me put food on my table and take care of my household needs. Now that I’ve said my peace, and I’ll say goodbye.”
