African Great Lakes Initiative2026-09-01T13:31:54-04:00
The African Great Lakes Initiative (AGLI) strengthens, supports, and promotes peace activities at the grassroots level in the Great Lakes region of Africa (Burundi, Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda). AGLI responds to requests from local religious and non-governmental organizations that focus on conflict management, peace building, trauma healing, and reconciliation. AGLI sponsors Peace Teams composed of members from local partners and the international community.

BURUNDI

AGLI partners with Friends Women’s Association, a women-led organization dedicated to empowering women living in a conflict/post-conflict environment to help each other and build a better future for themselves and their families by addressing both their physical and psychosocial health needs. As a consequence of long-term conflict, these women experience many difficult challenges such as poverty, gender-based violence, high rates of HIV/AIDS, inadequate medical care, and post-conflict trauma. Additionally, AGLI supports IPB/HROC- Burundi, which organized peace dialogues both at the community and larger levels to bring together local leaders from various political parties. Since 2015, IPB/HROC-Burundi has trained over 4,000 people.

RWANDA

Transformational Leadership Center (TLC)

The Transformational Leadership Center (TLC) empowers Rwandan communities to build peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable futures through four pillars: Peace Education, Leadership Empowerment, Community Mobilization for Poverty Reduction and climate resilience, and Digital Empowerment. Through Children’s Peace Libraries, TLC promotes healing, literacy for peace and justice, and conflict resolution, nurturing compassionate, peace-minded children. It equips leaders with ethical and governance skills while strengthening livelihoods through Community Mobilization for Poverty Reduction, climate resilience, savings groups, and women-focused initiatives. TLC also supports vulnerable groups, including disadvantaged children and young single mothers, through scholarships and holistic care. By integrating education, leadership, technology, and community action, TLC fosters social cohesion, reduces poverty, and drives lasting, community-led transformation across Rwanda.

Literacy for Peace & Justice

Literacy for Peace and Justice has over 100 children’s books at different levels of difficulty addressing values that promote understanding and respect and how to act to create peaceful, just communities.
