Elise Boulding

Elise Boulding is a convinced Friend with a long history of involvement in peacemaking concerns. She served as founding Co-Clerk of Friends Peace Teams from 1993-1996. She has also served on the Board of the American Friends Service Committee and on the Committee for the Quaker Program at the UN. Over the years, as a homemaker and peace activist and then as a professor of sociology, she worked with her husband, the late Kenneth Boulding, to help found the International Peace Research Association as well as the North American Consortium for Peace Research, Education and Development, and has helped initiate peace studies programs at several colleges and universities. At the UN, she has served on the Board for the UN University in Tokyo, on the UNESCO Peace Prize Commission, and as consultant to UNESCO peace programs. She is the author of The Underside of History and Building a Global Civic Culture.

The Elise Boulding Fund for Peace Team Work was established in 1997 to facilitate the participation in peace team work of people who might otherwise be unable to provide or raise funds to support their work. The fund is administered by Friends Peace Teams.

Members and attenders of Friends Meetings and Friends Churches who are sponsored by their Meeting or Church are eligible for funding. Young people are especially encouraged to apply to the fund for assistance.

Grants will cover a portion of the costs associated with peace team work including training, travel expense and peace team placement. Applicants will be supported by FPT in grass roots fundraising within their home communities and sponsoring Friends Meetings or Churches. Each year grants from the fund are given from money that has been raised for the fund.
