Update from Val Liveoak: May 23 - June 9, 2009
Peacebuilding en las Américas News
Written by Jessica Belt

There has been good news at the house where I am staying. Several weeks ago, the son of my landlady (and father of the little girl who lives here too) got into the US successfully. He had been more than two weeks waiting on the border for the coyote to take him across, then a friend had to fly out to get him from Houston (?) and drive him back to North Carolina where he and his wife live. The whole process cost over $7,000! And he and his wife work in restaurants.

Peacebuilding en las Américas News

I travelled to San Salvador from Guatemala the evening of the 8th. Sister Peggy O’Neill had agreed to pick me up and take me to Suchitoto, and she was at the bus terminal waiting for me. (The man who was in charge of the luggage kindly lifted my heavy suitcase into the car—a sample of the kind helpfulness of Salvadorans.) As we drove to Suchitoto, she told me about some of the plans she has for the Centro Arte para la Paz. There is a fairly well-known guitarist who will pay for music teachers for children to learn guitar and other instruments, which is an addition to the harp lessons a Canadian woman comes 4 times a year to give. She’s excited about increasing the Centro’s program in this way. The guitarist gave and will give in the future some concerts to benefit the Centro.
